Support builds for parliamentary Inquiry into planned sand flathead closure

In both the Upper House and Lower House of Parliament, from Devonport to Southport, Members of Parliament are lining up to offer their support for a short parliamentary inquiry into sand flathead management and a pause on the flathead ban while it takes place.

The week began with Ind. Member for Franklin David O’Byrne leading the call for a pause to the south east sand flathead ban, so the government could regain some public confidence.

Just hours later, Labor Shadow Primary Industries Minister Jane Finlay announced a proposal for a parliamentary inquiry. A call that was also swiftly backed by David.

A productive meeting with Ind. Member for Franklin, Peter George in Huonville on Wednesday ended with support for an open inquiry.

Today, Upper House Member for Huon, Dean Harriss has backed the pause, the parliamentary inquiry and said “Tasmanian’s are entitled to expect that governments will honour election commitments made in election campaigns.

“This is the third time the Liberal Government has reneged on a promise made at last year’s election, following u-turns on greyhound racing and the salmon industry.”

“It needs to do a lot better.”

“In the absence of a government willing to deliver on its commitments, I also offer my support for the proposed Parliamentary Inquiry.

“We need to get to the bottom of this fishing fiasco.”

Thanks Dean – we couldn’t have said it any better.
